Satsuen

The difficulty of continuing to photograph the same person. It runs deep, and it hurts. In my desire for unnecessary change, I found myself unable to truly face it, and instead, I ran away. I could not even tell the woman I love—my wife.

I had assumed that she would understand the kind of photography I was searching for. But she has her own life, and I have mine. It took me a long time to realize that each of us must follow our own path.

Our relationship did not begin as a conventional romance. It began with one person taking photographs and the other being photographed. For this exhibition, in order to pursue photographs that only the two of us could create, I felt it was necessary to draw a clear line between what existed “inside” the act of photographing and what existed “outside” of it.

I put aside all of our private photographs and returned to the relationship we had when we first met: the photographer and the photographed. And yet, in the time and places we share, there remains an atmosphere that belongs to the two of us alone.

To Juri,

I wanted to tell you once again that I love you as my wife, and also as the person I photograph.

Commentary

My career began on social media.

As a conventional artist statement, the text for Shoen may seem highly emotional, even poetic. This kind of writing is also commonly found among people who have presented their photography through social media. For that reason, I deliberately chose to write the statement in a poetic style.

By writing in personal terms—including my feelings toward my wife and my own vulnerabilities—I wanted to bring the context of social media, where my photographic practice originated, directly into the gallery.

Why do I take photographs? From what position am I speaking, and what am I asking through these images? At first, I tried to write a statement that addressed these questions while following the established conventions of photography and contemporary art. However, the more I wrote, the more I felt that I was being dishonest with myself.

I entered the world of photography through social media. I felt that it was necessary to make that position clear in this exhibition.
