Contrast

Contrast

Between late February and March 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I spent three days taking photographs in my room. At the time, I had a strong desire for my photography to be recognized, and I was attempting to express the resentment, loneliness, and emptiness I carried within me through my photographs.

Four years later, I had come to feel that I wanted to treat others with greater kindness. I began reworking the project, believing that revisiting the photographs from my present perspective and editing them into a different structure might allow me to understand how I had changed. As I proceeded, however, I realized that while part of me wanted to change, another part had remained unchanged since the photographs were taken. At that point, I found myself unable to continue editing.

When I compare my past and present selves, I often try to determine which is more desirable based on how I appear to others. Yet the parts of me that have changed and those that have not cannot be clearly separated. Both are part of who I am today.

I once believed that it was right for the self to be singular and consistent. Over time, however, I have come to think that it may be natural for a person to hold contradictory qualities within themselves. The person I present to society is clearly different from the person I am when alone in my room.

Although I have only one body, multiple selves exist within it, continually being compared with one another. Perhaps we live by repeatedly confronting these contrasts within ourselves.
